The latest stop on our MBA journey was Dubai, a city known for its opulence, modern skyline, and blend of cultures from around the globe.
This trip was much more than just an opportunity to visit this glittering metropolis; it was an opportunity to witness the intersection of innovation, tradition, and the immense energy that powers this dynamic region.
The first thing that strikes you about Dubai is the heat. The desert climate is no joke, with temperatures soaring well above what we’re used to in Europe. Yet, despite the climate, the city operates like a well-oiled machine. Towering skyscrapers rise from the sand, and as we moved between company visits, the extreme heat gave way to a cool, air-conditioned comfort, providing a very welcome reminder of how the city has adapted to its environment.
Our expedition started with visits to some of the most innovative companies in the region. Noor Energy stood out as a testament to Dubai’s forward-thinking approach to sustainability. Its solar project is one of the largest in the world, and learning about the ambitious plans to reduce the region’s reliance on fossil fuels was truly inspiring. The sheer scale of the operation – not to mention the technology driving its power plants – offered a glimpse into the future of energy, not just for Dubai, but for the world.
Next on our itinerary was AQWA Power, a leader in the renewable energy space. Their focus on sustainable energy projects aligns with the UAE’s broader goals of energy diversification. What struck me was the innovative mindset of the leadership at AQWA Power. They emphasized a future where energy is not just about profits, but also about protecting the environment and providing sustainable solutions for generations to come.
Finally, we had the privilege of visiting AW Rostamani, a family-owned business that has played a significant role in shaping Dubai’s automotive industry. The company embodies Dubai’s unique ability to blend traditional values with cutting-edge technology. AW Rostamani has continued to innovate while maintaining a strong sense of heritage, something that was apparent in every aspect of their business.
Beyond the business world, we experienced the natural beauty of the desert on a desert safari. As we rode ATVs across the dunes, feeling the vastness of the desert stretch out before us, I was struck by the city’s resilience and adaptability. From its humble beginnings as a small fishing village to one of the world’s leading business hubs today, Dubai’s story is a metaphor for what is possible with vision, hard work, and the willingness to embrace change.
The stark contrast between the bustling city and the serene emptiness of the desert was a powerful reminder of the duality that defines Dubai – a place where tradition and modernity coexist.
