IMD MBA student profile: Sarah Fuhrmann, from Germany, is the scholarship winner from last year's Young Leaders Assessment Challenge. Sarah shares insights into her experience so far.

With over seven years of experience working across different functions within the world of consumer goods, I decided the time was right to take the next step in progressing my career and applied for the MBA program at IMD.

IMD Campus, Lausanne, Switzerland

While applying for the program through the Young Leaders assessment challenge, I was able to get a dynamic and interactive first experience of the kind of group work I could expect as part of the course. Working with a very international and diverse group was fun and enriching, so much so that I even forgot that we were being assessed at times.

IMD was my choice for my MBA primarily due to its excellent, prestigious reputation and international focus — yet several other factors also differentiated it from other top business schools. One such reason was the small class size, which means students receive a much more engaged, personal experience. Another was IMD’s heavy focus on holistic leadership development. IMD’s idyllic location on the lake here in beautiful Lausanne also, of course, helped, especially given my love for nature and outdoor activities. Finally, the winner of the previous year’s Young Leaders challenge scholarship (Marie-Amelie Gléron) is a close friend, and hearing about her thoroughly positive experience ultimately confirmed that IMD was the right choice for me.

Enjoying the mountains with classmates

During the program, I look forward to being stretched and challenged, picking up new hard knowledge in areas I have not had much exposure to, such as accounting and finance, and honing the soft skills needed to become an effective leader. I hope this will help me fulfill my more long-term goals of continuing an international career within the FMCG industry and progressing into a senior leadership position.
