Growing up on a farm with a dad as he started his business from scratch in our old barn, I appreciated the value of entrepreneurship and hard work from an early age. This environment, coupled with a strong educational foundation – including a bachelor’s degree in engineering physics and business administration – shaped my analytical mindset and business acumen. These skills were further honed during my tenure as a Finance Manager at Villeroy & Boch, where I managed complex financial operations and strategic planning.
My professional and personal development was equally influenced by my involvement in church activities. Over the years, I have held various leadership positions, such as Chairman of the Board for a local kids and youth association, youth leader, and Sunday school teacher. These roles taught me the value of community, empathy, and servant leadership, principles that I carry into every aspect of my life.
Why an MBA, and why now?
Choosing to pursue an MBA at this stage in my career was driven by a desire to accelerate my professional growth and align with the Nordic culture of rapid educational advancement. While my role at Villeroy & Boch provided invaluable experience, I recognized that to create more significant value, I needed to gain a deeper skill in empowering teams and complex networks.
An MBA offered the perfect platform to refine my leadership skills, expand my global network, and gain a deeper understanding of strategic management. I am particularly interested in the intersection of technology, sustainability, and business – areas where I believe I can make a substantial impact.
The “a-ha!” moment
One of the most profound realizations during my MBA journey came from understanding the role of sustainability in business. The Corporate Sustainability Reporting Directive (CSRD) and other regulatory forces have highlighted the importance of viewing sustainability not just as a corporate responsibility but as a technical and accounting challenge. This revelation resonated with my background in engineering and finance, guiding me toward a career that integrates these disciplines to drive sustainable business practices.
Impact and aspirations
The MBA program has already had a transformative impact on me. The diverse cohort has exposed me to new perspectives and innovative ideas, while the rigorous curriculum has sharpened my strategic thinking and problem-solving abilities. Courses on leadership and sustainability have been particularly enlightening, reinforcing my belief in the importance of ethical and responsible business practices.
By the end of the program, I hope to have achieved several key goals:
- Enhanced leadership skills: Develop the ability to lead diverse teams effectively and inspire others to achieve their full potential.
- Global network: Build a strong network of doers and knowers who share a commitment to sustainability and innovation.
- Strategic vision: Gain a comprehensive understanding of how to integrate sustainability into business strategies, ensuring long-term success and positive impact.
In conclusion, my MBA journey is not just about advancing my career; it’s about equipping myself with the knowledge and skills to lead with purpose and drive meaningful change in the world. I am excited about the future and the opportunities that lie ahead – and grateful for the experiences and insights gained through this transformative program.
